Regional Projects

Regional organic markets, including those in developing countries are becoming more important and in that context, market-access issues and concerns on harmonization and equivalence are coming to the fore. Oftentimes, it can be easier to find solutions via harmonization or equivalence on the regional level than on the global level. These regional “blocks” may also find it easier to negotiate internationally for recognition and acceptance.

Therefore, GOMA is catalyzing and supporting initiatives of multiple countries in a regional aimed at fostering market access within the region and building the potential for regions to negotiate recognition in the larger international sphere.

The regional platforms are also excellent for the development of information and agreements among countries in a region and they also present an opportunity for communicating and implementing what has worked in other regions, including regional organic standards. Regional platforms are also key opportunities for pilot testing the ITF Tools (EquiTool and IROCB).

GOMA currently supports two regional initiatives. One, in Central America/Panama/Domincan Republic involves the development of a harmonized regional system for organic labeling and trade. The other is a platform in East, South-East and South Asia where stakeholders are developing a comprehensive framework for organic labeling and trade, including a regional organic standard.
